What it means to be on the Parent Council
By Keena Martin
I’ve always been a helicopter parent, so-to-speak. I was the parent who needed to know everything about my son’s school day. Of course, academics were a priority but I also wanted to know everything from who he ate lunch with in high school, to who they played with on the playground in elementary school and everything in between. The older he got, the more annoyed he became with my line of questioning and my school pop-ups. He, like most teenagers, wanted the freedom of being mature and making decisions of his own. The last thing he wanted was to see his mom on campus. So, I learned to take a more practical approach.
Since joining UC Davis’ Aggie Parent and Family Council, I feel a sense of belonging and inclusivity to the world that my young adult has chosen to be a part of. Volunteering to be a part of the Parent and Family Council has been a great experience. It has allowed me to connect and network with other parents so that I can stay abreast of the things that may impact my student.
This is an awesome way to have innovative ways to help him with things he didn’t know he needed help with.
