The fundraising event is being put on to support House of Angklung Wash DC to conduct a workshop and deliver Angklung performance at UC Davis in 2020!
About the group:
The UC Davis Department of Music has continuously sponsored a program in Indonesian music since 2006. For most of that time, Professor Henry Spiller has taught an ensemble course (MUS 149) with a focus on Sundanese gamelan music. Since 2012, Professor Spiller’s research has focused on Indonesian music for bamboo instruments, including the angklung (bamboo rattle).
In March 2020, House of Angklung, a leading female Angklung performance group based in Washington DC will conduct a workshop and performance for the UC Davis community. The angklung workshop and performance provides an opportunity for the Davis community to experience Indonesian culture first-hand, and intersects with Professor Henry Spiller’s research, offering a unique chance for UC Davis students to see how musical performance, practical study, and research connect in the fields of music and Indonesian studies.
Such an initiative is consistent with UC Davis’s mission of providing international experiences and rich regional diversity to globally educate all UC Davis students. However, these visiting artists do much more than display their artistry to students and the public. Through their interactions - they quite literally build bridges between Indonesian and American cultures.
While the UC Davis Department of Music has agreed to sponsor HOA’s visit to UC Davis by providing the venue and production staff at The Ann E. Pitzer Center in Davis, CA, House of Angklung will need to raise funds to cover the majority of expenses for the visit, including airline tickets and other incidental expenses. Therefore, HOA with the help of UC Davis Department Music, CAAA (Cal Aggie Alumni Association) Washington DC Chapter and Susi Haworth (UC Davis Parent) plan to present a benefit event in Washington DC on August 8th, 2019, from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm at the University of California Washington Center to raise funds to enable the House of Angklung to visit UC Davis. We would like to bring approximately 18 members of the HOA, which will cost around $400–600 per person.
Thank you for considering to attend!
