Go on a journey with us back in time to the Roaring 20’s, to the age of prohibition, jazz and the Harlem renaissance. Alumni owned, J.J. Pfister Distilling Company will take us through a demonstration of unique drinks from this era. Guest speakers Darrell Corti and Axel Borg will share the rich history of this era and how it influenced the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology program. This event is brought to you by UC Davis Alumni and Affiliate Relations and the UC Davis Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science

Featured Drinks: 

Bees Knees- Bright and tart, a refreshing cocktail! 

Jack Rose- A mellow cocktail with fruity sweetness and a candy pink color. 

Mystery Drink*- A riff on a rye whiskey sour, with the added sweetness of orange juice and rosemary syrup.

*You will all have a chance to name one of the featured drink for this event. This drink will be featured during Aggie Night at J.J. Pfister on the first Thursday of the month, so be sure to submit a name for this drink.

We encourage you to show up in your best 20’s cocktail attire. Just like a real speakeasy, you will receive your password to join us via email the day of the event, so keep an eye out for that. You will use the password to join our Zoom event.

Darrell Corti, owner of Corti Brothers in Sacramento, CA

Mr. Corti is an internationally known wine & food expert and has been a valuable partner to UC Davis for many years. He will be sharing the fascinating history of James Guymon, Professor of Enology, Emeritus, a beloved UC Davis Viticulture and Enology professor from 1939-1977.  Professor Guymon was a vital part of the enology and fermentation sciences curriculum and is best known as a specialist in the production of brandy.

Axel Borg, Emeritus Distinguished Wine and Food Science Bibliographer

Axel’s work to build the library’s wine collections has been widely acknowledged as an important force behind the UC Davis Library’s reputation as the leading wine library in the world. Axel will share with us the impact prohibition played on the development of the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology program and his contribution to the library collection of post prohibition wine and spirits artifacts currently on display at the UC Davis library.
