Why We Are Here

Across the nation, over  400,000 children are placed in foster care because their families are unable to care for them.  In California, for every 1,000 children, 5.8 enter foster care. 52% of foster youth attend schools that rank in the lowest 30%, only 50% will receive a high school diploma, and only 3% will earn a degree.

Youth currently or formerly in foster care face many challenges that impede their opportunities for higher education. For foster youth who make it to post secondary education, the challenges are often insurmountable without the intervention of caring campus professionals who serve as coaches and mentors.

Mission

The Guardian Scholars Program is committed to improving the educational outcomes for students with lived experiences in foster care by providing services and support to meet their needs through transition, graduation, and post-graduation planning. We strive to maximize educational opportunities and university experiences through our comprehensive programs and holistic advising to help students achieve their academic and personal goals.
